Hans Hofstaetter Obituary

Hans Joachim Hofstaetter, Age 73, passed away Wednesday August 3, 2016 with his daughter and loving family members at his side after a long battle with Dementia/Alzheimers disease.

Hans was born in Burersdors, Germany on June 25, 1943, to the late Joachim Hofstaetter and Elfriede A. Bindig. He was born during WWII, where he and his mother endured very tough times in Germany. His father of Austrian decent passed away when Hans was only 2 months old. Later, his mother remarried and had two more children while living in Germany.

At the age of 9, he left Hamburg Germany on November 4, 1952 and arrived in New York City on November 15th , 1952 on the M.V. Italia voyage No. 37. He took this voyage with his mother Elfriede Bindig, and two brothers Wilfred Wisniewski and Erhard Wisniewski. The final destination was Boston MA where they made a new home with his stepfather Antoni Wisniewski. This move to the United States was a result of very difficult times in Germany (after WWII). While living in Boston, his mother had two more children Steve Wise, and Doris Wisniewski.

He was raised in Boston, MA, with his family, and at a young age decided to serve in the United States Army Airborne and was honorably discharged after serving for 3 years. The date of discharge was November 22, 1963 which is the same day President Kennedy was assassinated. Shortly thereafter, he worked at James Russell Engineering for 48 years.

Hans married Jacqueline Kay Caron on July 17, 1965, and had one daughter together, Laura Elfriede Hofstaetter born on January 3, 1969. They resided in areas around Boston and eventually moved to Walpole, MA due to segregation of the city. Later, Hans married the late Barbara Djerf and they resided in Quincy, MA for many years. After Barbara passed away, Hans resided in Quincy, MA until approximately 3 years ago when he moved to Naples Florida after retiring.

Hans was an avid coin collector, and was known as a very hard worker. In addition, he was a very generous loving man and was a true gentleman whom always dressed formally every place he went. He was also very fond of eating in fine restaurants and loved to travel. Hans very much enjoyed listening to music and loved to dance. If you went on the dance floor with him, he led the entire dance which made anyone feel very special. Hans was somewhat of a free spirit and always enjoyed going out to places especially restaurants. He was very enjoyable and fun to be around, and was truly a nice gentle giving man.

Hans dreamed of living in Naples Florida after retirement which he accomplished for 2 years. In Naples, he walked all around, and frequented many restaurants. He enjoyed the year round warm climate and was truly happy living there. During the past 11 months he resided in Nashville TN with his daughter Laura Hofstaetter Rigsby and son-in-law Paul Wesley Rigsby due to his battle with dementia/Alzheimers.

He was Preceded in death by his parents Joachim Hofstaetter and Elfriede A. Bindig, wife Barbara Djerf, brother Wilfred Wisniewski. Step father Antoni Wisniewski.

He is survived by: his daughter Laura Elfriede Hofstaetter Rigsby, son in law Paul Wesley Rigsby, sister Doris Wisniewski, brother, Erhard Wisniewski and wife Thelma Moreno, brother Steve Wise, and loving friend Ann Cassidy along with several nieces and nephews and two sister in laws.
